Emergency Police Notification Devices: Team Up for Safety

In plain sight and hidden, devices across campus can summon police quickly. UT Police at Houston reminds our community that Emergency Police Notification Devices are available throughout campus that connect directly to emergency responders.

“It is important for the community to be aware of emergency devices because they provide a direct and immediate way to request help during emergencies,” said Captain Justin Taylor. "Knowing their locations and functions can enhance personal safety, reduce response times, and allow law enforcement or emergency responders to assist more effectively.”

Know Your Emergency Devices

Emergency devices across the campus ensure rapid response in critical situations. Understanding how each device functions is essential for personal safety and the security:

  • Pull Station – Pull the handle to trigger a silent alarm and notify emergency police services.
  • Exterior and Interior Emergency Telephone Pedestals – Press the red button to directly contact emergency police services.
  • Panic Button – Press the button inward to alert emergency police services. Use caution to distinguish between panic buttons and door release buttons, as they may appear similar. Always read the labels before activation.

Activating any of these devices will prompt an immediate police response to your location.

“If someone is unsure about using an emergency device during an emergency, they should still activate it,” Taylor said. “It is always better to err on the side of caution when safety is at risk.”

Those activating a device should remain at the location if it is safe to do so and provide any relevant details to responding personnel. If it is unsafe to stay, move to a secure location and contact emergency services by phone, if possible, at 713-792-2890.

“Please note, emergency responders would rather investigate a false alarm than miss an opportunity to assist someone in need,” Taylor said.
